Teaching Approach & Educational Philosophy
My legacy as an African-American male provided the greatest inspiration.
The history of my ancestors being unable to acquire basic knowledge without having to do so in secrecy. Having been educated in an all African-American setting by teachers who were dedicated to the children they served, I had role models. These men and woman did not have technology, nor did they have the funding schools today possess. They had a dedication to their cause, that of proving the young people they taught an opportunity for a better life through education. There is something about being able to produce productive people with very little resources. This is what really inspired me. I knew early in my life that if these teachers could produce productive citizens, then surely I could do the same.
I can’t leave out my family and all the other institutions that are very strong within the African-American community.
Lastly, the times in which we live today continue to inspire me to teach. There seems to be an even greater need for education today. Securing one degree or skills is not enough, one has to continue to educate themselves throughout their lives. Statistics suggest that a young person today could change occupations five or more times. How can I not want to teach when times are like they are.
